Even among the wealthiest kingdoms and independent cities, warfare is a common affair. Raiders and bandits attack merchants and smaller towns because of their wealth. The Holy Emperor calls up levies to support his campaigns to the south. At any time, the Dänisch people could be in the midst of civil war for their own throne. Mercenary troops make themselves available for hire. And city councils raise urban militias for defense and to settle disputes with neighbors when trade agreements and diplomacy fail.

Battles and other large-scale fighting are carried out by detachments: groups of combatants who are similarly armed and armored within a group.

This is a simple system for organizing and leading detachments in battle that expands on the rules in Into the Odd by Chris McDowall and Cairn by Yochai Gal. It allows for domain-level play in your games.
